"The Structure Of Earth.”  I grew up with fields and woods around me. By the time I was 10 or so they were gone. In their place were the first late 50’s early 60’style rambler houses. Row upon row of them on smooth asphalt roads. Miles of them.  My work bears this mark. The added dimension of self portraiture makes me think of how the self may grow in this mix of landscape and technological event, how like daily experience, this is many leveled, intense, and demands negotiations through it. A type of editing-what to read, what not to, what to listen to, what to look at. Perhaps we are all interactive creations, both creator and created. Both victims and perpetrators. “We are all guilty of all before all,” as Dostoyevsky says, both heroes and quiet, ordinary ones or ones that just  talk.  So much of this seems to now happen, or not to happen, before the square or in the square -- screen, building, house, phone, pda.  I think these paintings reflect that.     g j  f
